 2 cups whole milk
 4 egg yolks
 2 tbsp white sugar
 1 tsp vanilla extract

Gently heat the milk until just boiling.

Whisk the egg yolks with the vanilla extract and sugar whilst the milk is heating.

Temper the egg yolks (by adding the hot milk to the egg mixture a little at a time, whisking continuously).

Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and heat gently for about 20 minutes, stirring continuously, until thickened.
